Janne Kyttanen

EKOCYCLE

In the late 90’s Janne created a future manufacturing platform concept, which could recycle all ocean plastic and people could 3D print products out of them in their homes. It was utopian at the time, but fast forward 15 years and the idea came to life together with Coca Cola, Will.i.am and 3D systems. Each EKOCYCLE cartridge is made in part from post-consumer recycled 20oz PET plastic bottles.

Recycling, energy consumption and the use of our resources is a very delicate and complicated topic. Recycling only makes sense if it reduces waste and the energy used to recycle is less than what it takes to create new. However, change takes time. Most people for example agree, that electric cars are the future, even though there are still short term criticism on the energy required for creating batteries or questions on how to recycle them. In a similar manner, localizing production, recycling our materials and 3D printing them in our homes, makes perfect future sense, even though it is still more energy efficient to produce things in controlled and centralized locations.

Ekocycle Cube, is based on the same design, which Janne had previously designed for 3D systems.
